Avideh Shashaani, the sixth annual recipient of the "Waging Peace" Award instituted by President Jimmy Carter, is the founding president of the Fund for the Future of Our Children, established in 1993 (www.futureofchilren.net). She is the author of four books, including Little Garlic: Enchanted Tales for All Ages, the recipient of the national INDIE Excellence Awards in the category of children's inspirational literature (www.littlegarlic.org). Her book of poetry, Tell Me Where to Be Born focuses on violence against children. She is the editor of Something Deeper Happened: Young Voices and the 2008 US Election with a foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. She has a been a presenter at many prestigious forums including the United Nations Conference on Human Rights and the Parliament of World Religions. She was the first co-director of the International Institute for Rehabilitation in Developing Countries founded by the United Nations. She has a Ph.D. in Sufi Studies.
