Jeffrey Lamar Coleman is Professor of English at St. Mary's College of Maryland. His research areas include literature of the American Civil Rights Movement, music of social protest and resistance, and 20th and 21st century American literature. Coleman is the editor of Words of Protest, Words of Freedom: Poetry of the American Civil Rights Movement and Era (Duke University Press) and author of Spirits Distilled: Poems (Red Hen Press). He is also poetry editor and associate editor of The Journal of Hip Hop Studies, and a former editor of Delaware Poetry Review. His essay, "Singing is Swinging: The Soul Force of 20th Century Black Protest Music," is forthcoming in The Black Intellectual Tradition: African American Thought in the Twentieth Century (University of Illinois Press), edited by Derrick P. Alridge, Cornelius L. Bynum, and James B. Stewart.
