Kira Thurman is the 16th winner of the "Marfield Prize" for Writing in The Arts. This national book award is given to the best book about the arts intended to widen the audiencevand broaden public interest. She is Assistant Professor of History and German Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan. A classically trained pianist who grew up in Austria, she is also a founder of the website blackcentraleurope.com. She writes for the New Yorker, The New York Times, Point Magazine, and others.
